Here’s how ServiceFM clears mould-affected buildings in Queensland (and beyond!)

Mould growth in buildings isn’t just yucky to look at, it’s dangerous. For residents and building users in Queensland, where high humidity is a constant concern, mould is fast becoming a widespread issue.

Asthma Australia reports that 50% of Australians had mould or dampness in their home in 2022, with one-third (34%) specifically reporting mould in their home.

At ServiceFM, we’ve seen an increase in the number of mould-affected properties across the country, specifically Queensland – which is why we’re responding with expert solutions designed to tackle the problem at its source.

Why mould matters (and why it’s worse in Queensland)

Mould thrives in warm, damp environments, and Queensland’s tropical and subtropical climate provides the perfect conditions for it to occur. Following a particularly wet and muggy summer in 2024/25, we’ve seen a sharp rise in buildings requiring urgent remediation, from large schools to small offices.

Unchecked mould growth can cause respiratory illnesses, asthma flare-ups, skin irritation, and more severe complications in people with allergies or weakened immune systems. Symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and fatigue are becoming increasingly common in those exposed to mould, which is often linked to undetected mould exposure in homes and workplaces.

ServiceFM’s step-by-step mould-busting process

We use a comprehensive, step-by-step process to identify, remove, and prevent mould growth – ensuring both the cause and the symptoms are addressed:

  1. Inspection

Our certified professionals use tools such as moisture meters and infrared cameras to detect mould, even in hidden areas. We also identify the source of excess moisture, whether from leaks, condensation, or poor ventilation.

  1. Containment

To prevent airborne mould spores from spreading during remediation, we isolate affected areas with plastic sheeting and, in large jobs, use negative air pressure systems. HVAC systems in contaminated areas are temporarily shut down to prevent cross-contamination.

  1. Moisture control

Fixing leaks, improving airflow, and installing dehumidifiers are critical steps in reducing moisture levels and preventing mould from returning.

  1. Mould removal

Hard surfaces are deep-cleaned with antimicrobial agents, while porous materials such as plasterboard or ceiling tiles are removed and disposed of. HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers are used to purify the environment.

  1. Drying

Once the mould is removed, industrial-grade drying equipment is used to fully dry the area. Damaged materials are replaced with mould-resistant alternatives where appropriate.

With mould, prevention is better than a cure.

Nobody wants mould to return, so what’s the solution? We can help clients prevent future outbreaks by implementing:

  • Regular inspections of high-risk areas
  • Routine humidity checks
  • Installation of exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Sealing and insulating moisture-prone zones
  • Education for occupants on how to spot early signs of mould.

When to call the experts (that’s us!)

If your building has visible mould covering more than 10 square feet, a musty odour, or residents reporting persistent health issues, it’s time to call the professionals!

ServiceFM’s cleaning specialists adhere to strict standards such as those from the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification), ensuring safe, compliant, and effective mould remediation.

With Queensland’s climate increasing the likelihood of mould outbreaks, preventative action and professional intervention have never been more important.
